May 29, 2003 -- Six Days Old
Today Shadow kept his eyes open fulltime when not napping. He is alert and demands
food as often as we will give it to him. The feather tubes on his tail are longer
today, with just the very tips showing dark feather edges. Tonight he twittered
a few times as he slept. He traveled to Grandma's house twice today and did very
well in the car -- he travelled in his homemade 'nest', into which I had placed
a sock filled with rice (and had warmed this in the microwave). He loves snuggling
next to that warm sock!
A good view
of the few feathers I have. Notice the very short feather sheaths (pinfeathers)
on my wings. In a few days they will grow surprisingly longer and begin to unfurl.
Mom says
that I am very good at gaping for food at this age. I agree!
