Shadow's baby cage is set up for a growing baby bird.
I took Shadow's box and baby nest away today and set up his "baby cage"
with perches. Shadow will only remain in this transitional cage for a short time
and will then move into a flight cage. For now, Shadow is mostly outside of his
cage and is only inside it when we must leave the house, when company comes over,
or when the cats need some time with the family.
The new perches
thrilled Shadow. Since he still likes being in a 'nest' sometimes, I left him
a small one to nap in when he likes. He loved the new toys , especially the
strips of newspaper hanging on the cage's wall, but he stilll loves his teddy
bear best.
Shadow is beginning
to exert his independence more often since learning to fly. He is now in the
midst of a "stubborn phase" which our older starlings also went through
at this age, for he will only eat when he decides he wants to. Handfeeding
has become a game in which mom must figure out the "perfect" times
to handfeed him, or else he will not eat. Part of the game involves never
being handfed inside his cage.
Mom redecorated
my baby cage. Thank goodness she left my teddy bear in there!

Okay,
I've checked out the new cage furnishings. Now it's time to fly back to mom!
