June 7, 2003 -- Fifteen Days Old
First flight. First beak swiping. First nap
standing up!
Shadow beak swiped for the first time ever today! It was very cute to see a tiny
starling do such a thing just like the adult birds. Jeremy recorded this first
beak-swiping on video, and we will add it to Shadow's new video page soon. He
also stood up during a nap for the first time and turned his head to the back.
AND . . . . he flew a small distance -- app. 2 ½ feet from his play
stand to the top of Ralph's video camera! His flight was short and not too steady,
but fly he did! We are in shock that a baby starling would fly this young! Sunshine
did not take his first flight until 19 days old, and Stormy first flew at 23 days
old. Shadow is very small to be flying.
Flapping
my wings furiously. I actually flew to dad's video camera right after this photo
was taken! No one could believe it, for I am very young to be flying.

All the
big starling birds here play with these toys, so I was given one to play with
too. However, I really think I would enjoy this thing better if it would feed
me.
